Dear Baldwin Families,
Shakespeare once said, “The earth has music for those who listen.” I know you have been listening! It is impossible not to have heard about the successes in the Baldwin UFSD. There is so much opportunity and potential inside our schools and within our community that others have stopped to notice. Recently, we mailed the latest edition of the Baldwin Beat to all Baldwin homes, highlighting just some of the Points of Pride that have made us proud. An electronic version is also available on our website. I encourage you to read it (again) so you don’t miss the story of our journey to the top!
We strive to give our students the opportunity to live by our district mantra of “We are Innovative! We are Inclusive! We are Involved! We are Baldwin!” Not a day goes by without someone from our student body, faculty, and staff making us proud. With the school year about to begin, we look forward to the many new and ongoing innovative experiences made available to our future generation of young adults.
Our Baldwin High School Hastings Academy, including our Career and Technical Education program, will move to Shubert School with a new corporate partner, the Simon Youth Foundation (SYF). Part of the Simon Mall Corporation, SYF will work with our district to ensure that students have access to valuable internships and college scholarships. Nationally, we are the first partner in this type of collaboration with SYF and the only SYF partner of any kind in the region. This year, our college partnerships expand to include participation of a select group of high school seniors who will have an opportunity to study manufacturing technology, pre-nursing or HVAC. This will also be the first year we partner with Molloy College, giving students an opportunity to take credit-bearing courses toward a teaching degree. If students begin in grade 9 and work through grade 12, they will officially enter Molloy as sophomores. Also, new to our wide selection of Advanced Placement offerings is AP Capstone, one of two new courses to round out our college credit course offerings. Baldwin is one of only a few districts to offer this course to students.
Beginning in the fall, Baldwin Middle School will partner with EL Education to develop relevant and meaningful learning opportunities for students and teachers. Per their website, “When students and teachers are engaged in work that is challenging, adventurous and meaningful, learning and achievement flourish. Our mission is to create classrooms where teachers can fulfill their highest aspirations, and students achieve more than they think possible, becoming active contributors to building a better world. EL Education’s overarching vision of increasing student engagement and elevating and expanding student achievement. To realize that vision, we focus on student excellence in three core areas: mastery of knowledge and skills, character and quality of work.” We are very excited about this partnership.
Baldwin Middle School will also launch Ready, Set, Report, a program similar to Plaza Elementary School’s highly successful TEAM ORCHID, which will give our student’s a voice through digital journalism, furthering a positive school culture.
At the elementary level, our outstanding STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) program will continue in grades 4 and 5. We will expand our technology specialist support to the K-5 level. In September, we will unveil “Baldwin Then and Now,” a Baldwin history project produced last year in grade 3 that celebrates the history of Baldwin. A book launch will take place in September. Stay tuned for the chance to purchase a copy of this beautiful walk through Baldwin’s history. Of course, we celebrate Plaza for their New York State and National designation as a School of Character. Additionally, Lenox and Plaza Schools join Baldwin Middle School and Meadow School as National PTA Schools of Excellence.
Finally, we will unveil new learning spaces for K-12 in every building. We continue to blaze the trail of 21st century education and provide the foundation for others to explore the creation of a learning environment that prepares even our youngest students for the world of work.
All of this could not be possible without the hard work of faculty and staff and their collaboration with our families. We ask for your continued support in ensuring that our students are punctual, present, and well prepared for school every day. We recognize and appreciate that Baldwin is an amazing community, where everyone comes together for their children and we are privileged to be able to work toward a shared purpose.
I urge you to follow in the words of Shakespeare. Stay in touch with the message of our school community and spread the word. Be proud of our schools and our community because we are an example for all those around us. Remember: We are Innovative! We are Inclusive! We are Involved! We are Baldwin!
Your Very Proud Superintendent,
Shari L. Camhi, Ed.D.
