Literacy & Language Arts

Baldwin Union Free School District's K-5 literacy program is built on Magnetic Literacy, a comprehensive, systematic, and integrated approach to literacy instruction that develops confident readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers. Grounded in the "Science of Reading," Magnetic Literacy provides direct, explicit instruction in foundational skills while seamlessly integrating word study, reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, speaking, and listening into meaningful daily learning experiences. All K-5 students receive high-quality, research-based instruction aligned with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards through the Magnetic Literacy curriculum.

Throughout the school year, Baldwin elementary students build knowledge through engaging thematic units that expose them to rich, complex texts and meaningful opportunities to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply their learning across content areas. This knowledge-building approach helps students deepen their understanding of the world while strengthening their literacy skills.

Teachers regularly collect and analyze student learning data to monitor progress, identify individual strengths and areas for growth, and provide targeted support or enrichment based on each student's needs. This data helps ensure that instruction remains responsive and that every student is appropriately challenged and supported throughout the learning process.

The goal of the Literacy and English Language Arts curriculum is to empower every learner across the Baldwin Union Free School District to become a skilled reader, thoughtful writer, effective communicator, and lifelong learner who can think critically, read complex texts with confidence, and achieve success in school and beyond.
