Baldwin High School Art and Photography Students Embark on Leaving2Learn at Hofstra University’s Museum of Art

Fine and Performing Arts Academy Finds Inspiration at the Lowe Gallery

Baldwin High School art and photography students recently visited Hofstra University for a day filled with art, inspiration, and hands-on learning.

The trip began with a visit to The Hofstra Museum of Art’s Lowe Gallery, where students viewed “Love is the Message,” a powerful exhibition by Jamel Shabazz, a celebrated street photographer and local artist currently living in Hempstead, NY. Shabazz is best known for capturing vibrant portraits of everyday life in New York City, highlighting themes of love, strength, and community.

Students participated in a thoughtful discussion led by Amy Garay Solomon, Director of Education at the Hofstra Museum of Art, who guided them in exploring how Shabazz uses subject matter and composition to convey his message to the viewer.

Following the gallery visit, students toured Hofstra’s art facilities, including the darkroom and student workspaces, gaining a behind-the-scenes look at college-level art and photography programs.

The day concluded with a visit to the Hofstra Arboretum, where students photographed nature and the surrounding architecture. The trip offered an inspiring mix of art appreciation, creative exploration, and real-world learning.
