Baldwin High School @ Shubert Students Engage in Leaving2Learn at Bethany House

Students Gain Hands-on Experience from Local Non-Profit

Students from Baldwin High School@Shubert—Grace Arenas Escalante, Nickera Blake, Emily Bree Dorimain, and Chester Zarnoch IV—participated in an invaluable Leaving to Learn (L2L) at the Bethany House of Nassau County—a local community-based nonprofit organization committed to fostering healing, stability, and growth for women and children facing homelessness.

The hands-on educational experience made possible through the guidance and support of Ms. Tamara Richards, the Baldwin High School@Shubert’s work based learning coordinator, who helps connect students with real world experiences with the curriculum. While at the Bethany House, students voluntarily sorted donations and spoke with staff members to learn more about the day-to-day work and career pathways within nonprofit and social service organizations.

Through this learning experience, students developed essential workplace skills including communication, collaboration, fundraising, and event planning, while gaining a deeper appreciation for civic engagement and the importance of giving back to the community.

Dr. Gabriella Franza, assistant director of instructional programs for Baldwin Union Free School District, shared how proud she was of the students and the overall visit.

“I am incredibly proud of the meaningful, hands-on experiences our students gain through partnerships like Bethany House. Our multi-year collaboration has consistently provided students with authentic learning opportunities that connect classroom instruction to real-world impact, while supporting an organization that does vital work in our community.”
