Ms. Dawn Thompson One of 20 Honored by LISTEMELA

Baldwin Middle School science teacher, Ms. Dawn Thompson, was recently recognized with the Long Island Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Educational Leadership Association (LISTEMELA) STEM Star Award for her “exemplary commitment to the vision of LISTEMELA, which is equitable student access to high quality learning experiences in STEM.” She was nominated by Ms. Susan J. Ferrigno, the grades 6-12 science supervisor for Baldwin Union Free School District.

“The STEM Star Teacher Award was created to honor educators who serve as a beacon of light for their students, and Ms. Dawn Thompson exemplifies that ideal,” said Ms. Ferrigno. “What truly sets her apart is her exceptional ability to engage students in thinking routines that promote deep, analytical thought and a passion for learning. She has created a classroom environment where inquiry thrives, questions are welcomed, and students are continually challenged to think critically and solve complex problems. We are incredibly proud to see her hard work and dedication recognized with this well-deserved honor.”

Superintendent Mr. Anthony Mignella commended Ms. Thompson. “We are incredibly proud of Ms. Dawn Thompson for this well-deserved recognition,” he said. “Now more than ever, STEM education plays a vital role in laying the foundation for our students’ future success. Her ability to ignite curiosity and foster critical thinking while instilling a love of science in her science classes exemplifies the outstanding teaching taking place throughout the Baldwin Union Free School District each and every day.”

LISTEMELA is a professional organization committed to advancing STEM education through leadership, professional learning, collaboration, and advocacy. The nonprofit supports educators and promotes equitable access to high-quality STEM learning experiences for all students. LISTEMELA established the STEM Star Award to honor educators who act as a “beacon of light” for students. This award recognizes those who exemplify a strong commitment to the organization's vision of enhancing science education on Long Island by fostering leadership and ensuring equitable access to high-quality learning experiences for all students.

Ms. Thompson was presented with the award, along with the 19 other recipients, at the LISTEMELA recognition ceremony in May. This marks the fourth time a Baldwin science teacher has received this distinction.
