ENL Teacher Adeline Scibelli Contributes Instructional Materials to 9 Dimensions of Scaffolding for Multilingual Learners

Baldwin Middle School English as a New Language (ENL) teacher Ms. Adeline Scibelli has achieved an exciting professional milestone, in which her original classroom materials have been published in the newly released textbook, 9 Dimensions of Scaffolding for Multilingual Learners, authored by renowned TESOL experts Dr. Andrea Honigsfeld, Dr. Maria Dove, and Dr. Carrie McDermott.

Ms. Scibelli’s collaboration with Dr. Honigsfeld began more than a decade ago, when she first attended a TESOL conference where Dr. Honigsfeld was presenting. “I was immediately inspired by her teaching strategies and expertise in English as a New Language,” Scibelli recalled. “She truly helped develop my passion for teaching ENL students.”

That early inspiration led to a professional relationship that continued to grow. Scibelli attended additional conferences and workshops on ENL co-teaching, and eventually, Dr. Honigsfeld expressed interest in observing Scibelli’s co-taught ENL Biology classes at Baldwin High School. The observation visits grew into multiple sessions, often with additional educators in attendance. During this time, Scibelli was also introduced to Dr. Dove and Dr. McDermott, professors in the TESOL program at Molloy University.

After several successful visits, Scibelli and her co-teacher were invited to present at the Molloy TESOL Conference, where they shared their work and insights on co-teaching strategies.

About two years ago, Dr. Honigsfeld reached out again—this time requesting several of Scibelli’s social studies worksheets for a new book she was developing on instructional scaffolding. Scibelli gladly contributed her materials, and months later, she received the exciting news that two of her worksheets would be included in the published text.

Her featured worksheets appear in Chapter 2, “Instructional Scaffolding.” One focuses on vocabulary related to the Panama Canal, while the other demonstrates chunking strategies using World War I alliances, both designed for 8th-grade social studies learners.

“At Baldwin Middle School, we celebrate excellence and today, we proudly honor Ms. Adeline Scibelli. Her dedication to our multilingual learners, her artistry as an educator, and her belief in every child’s voice have reached far beyond our walls. Ms. Scibelli, we are so proud of you,” said Dr. Erica Taylor, principal of Baldwin Middle School.,

In addition to her teaching role, Ms. Scibelli also serves as the Baldwin High School girls varsity cheerleading coach.
