Baldwin Middle School's Young Men of Excellence Celebrate Character and Camaraderie

Baldwin Middle School recently celebrated the growth, leadership, and character development of students in its Young Men of Excellence Club during the second annual "Moving Into Manhood" ceremony, a culminating event recognizing the young men's journey toward adulthood and preparing them for future success.

Open to all young men in grades 6-8, the Young Men of Excellence Leadership program provides students with the support and guidance needed to thrive while developing essential leadership skills, including communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. Throughout the school year, participants build self-confidence and self-esteem, strengthen positive relationships with peers and adults, and learn the importance of responsibility, integrity, respect, and perseverance.

The ceremony celebrated not only students' academic and personal achievements, but also the values they have demonstrated through mentorship, reflection, service, and brotherhood. The program emphasizes that true manhood is not defined by age, but by character, compassion, discipline, and the ability to positively impact others.

“This year's Young Men of Excellence program reminded us that manhood is not defined by age, but by character, responsibility, and the choices our young men make each day,” stated Dr. Erica Taylor, principal of Baldwin Middle School. “Through mentorship, meaningful conversations, and our 'Moving Into Manhood' ceremony, we challenged our students to lead with integrity, respect, and purpose. Watching these young men grow in confidence and embrace their potential has been one of the greatest joys of the school year.”

The event featured keynote addresses from respected community leaders, including Superintendent Anthony Mignella, owner of Backyard BBQ and successful entrepreneur Kenny Ware, Stony Brook University School of Communication and Journalism Assistant Professor and longtime journalist Zachary R. Dowdy, and Baldwin alumnus and pioneering restaurateur Marcelo Erickson. Each speaker encouraged students to work hard, persevere, and remain committed to the values reinforced through the Young Men of Excellence program and their Baldwin education, reminding them that integrity, responsibility, resilience, and character are the foundation for lifelong success.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of a gold and blue necktie and tie pin to each participant. More than a piece of formal attire, the necktie symbolizes professionalism, accountability, self-respect, and belonging. Just as ties are worn during life's important milestones, the presentation serves as a reminder that these young men are prepared to approach future opportunities with confidence and purpose.

As members of the Young Men of Excellence, students leave the program with the understanding that excellence is measured not by appearance or status, but by the choices they make, the respect they show others, and the positive example they set for those around them. Through meaningful mentorship and leadership experiences, Baldwin Middle School continues to empower its students to become compassionate, confident leaders both inside and outside the classroom.

About the Keynote Speakers:

Kenny Ware
Kenny Ware is a respected business owner, School Board Trustee, and community leader. As the owner of Backyard BBQ, he has successfully built strong partnerships with esteemed institutions including Cornell University, Adelphi University, and the Supreme Court of Nassau County.

Mr. Ware serves as President of the Black Restaurant Owners Coalition and is actively involved in supporting political candidates as both a sponsor and representative. With a strong record of leadership and service, he is also a future candidate for public office, with many additional accomplishments that reflect his ongoing commitment to community advancement.

Zachary R. Dowdy

Zachary R. Dowdy is an Assistant Professor of Practice at Stony Brook University’s School of Communication and Journalism and a longtime, accomplished journalist. He has reported for major publications including The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, and Newsday, covering a wide range of topics such as criminal justice, urban affairs, and international issues.

In addition to his distinguished reporting career, Mr. Dowdy has taught journalism at several institutions and is deeply committed to mentoring young writers through programs such as the Robert W. Greene Summer Institute for High School Journalists. A proud Baldwin resident, he remains actively engaged in the local community and supports a variety of educational initiatives.

Marcelo Erickson
Marcelo is a successful restaurateur and franchise owner, operating multiple No Good Burger locations along with a fleet of highly popular food trucks. Known for his commitment to excellence, he has earned numerous accolades, including recognition for Best Burger and Best Restaurant.

Originally from Baldwin and a proud graduate of the Baldwin School District, Marcelo continues to expand his rapidly growing and highly successful brand while maintaining strong ties to his community.
