Baldwin UFSD’s String Festival Unites Students Across All Grade Levels for 1st Time

A large group of people, likely a choir or performance group, gathered on a stage in front of a seated audience in a theater or auditorium setting.

An All-District Orchestra Performance Takes Place During “Music in our Schools” Month

The Baldwin High School District’s String Festival struck a powerful chord this year by bringing together student musicians from every level of the district. In a rare and ambitious collaboration, elementary, middle, and high school students performed side-by-side—an experience that few Long Island districts have attempted.

Held during March, which is also “Music in our Schools” Month, the festival celebrated not only musical talent but also the excellence of Baldwin’s performing arts program. The highlight of the evening was the all-district finale, where students of varying ages and skill levels from elementary, middle and high schools united on one stage as a single orchestra.

“This year was special because this was the first time we attempted an all-district finale, in which all members, elementary through high school orchestra played on the stage at the same time,” explained Mr. André Poprilo, director of fine & performing arts for Baldwin Union Free School District. “This is not an easy feat musically or logistically, but it was a powerful moment for our students and a powerful demonstration of the strength of the program.”

Coordinating such a performance required significant planning, from aligning musical arrangements to managing rehearsal schedules across schools. The evening was made possible thanks to the dedication and high level of instruction of music teachers Mrs. Stephanie Muir of Baldwin High School, Ms. Noellia Nicotri of Baldwin Middle School, and Mrs. Maia Nau of Meadow Elementary School.

The 2026 String Festival was a testament to the district’s commitment to arts education and innovative educational experiences.
