Lights, Camera, Learning: Baldwin Middle and High School Students Participate in Inaugural “Go Live! Day”

Hands-on Workshops Connect Academy and Pre-Academies to Industry Experts in Journalism, Broadcasting, and Public Relations

Baldwin High School recently transformed into a dynamic hub for media, journalism, and storytelling during the inaugural Go Live! Day. The unique day of learning was hosted for the high school’s News, Media and Film Academy students as well as middle school students in the Public Speaking and Debate and Bruins News Network Pre-Academies, where industry professionals were brought in for an interactive experience designed to showcase the various aspects of communications and media production, from on-camera interviewing to behind-the-scenes coordination to publicity. The educational experience was among the many new experiences offered through the School2Career programs this year.

Throughout the morning, the students engaged in three interactive workshops, each conducted by experienced experts in journalism, broadcasting, and communications. This structure allowed students to immerse themselves in each topic, enhancing their practical skills and broadening their understanding of the media landscape.

These sessions collectively provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the media process, highlighting the importance of collaboration, communication, and preparation in professional settings.

Students also benefited from Professor Zachary Dowdy’s session “Journalism Beyond High School: What College and Careers Look Like.” His presentation provided valuable insights into college journalism programs, career pathways, and the evolving nature of media across industries.

In “Headlines to Humanity: How News Reporting Tells Real Stories,” ABC7 Eyewitness News reporter and proud Baldwin alum, Chantee Lans, along with her camera operator demonstrated the art of news reporting. Students learned how reporters identify and produce newsworthy stories, while helping to connect communities through news coverage. A key highlight was hands-on experience with a news truck, where students observed the equipment, including a 40lb camera, the teamwork involved, as well as the decision-making required for live news delivery.

Bill Corbett Jr., president of Corbett Public Relations, introduced students to the field of public relations during his workshop, “Careers in Public Relations and Strategic Communication.” His session highlighted how storytelling, messaging, and media strategy influence public perception across industries, expanding students’ understanding of communication careers beyond traditional journalism. Giving solid examples, he demonstrated how he developed creative media pitches to help his clients secure national press, leading to substantial profit growth for their business and increased awareness for their non-profit.

Each presenter conducted four rotating sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 12:25 p.m., ensuring all students could attend every session. The interactive format kept students engaged while exposing them to diverse skills and career options.

“Go Live! Day was more than a series of workshops—it offered students a glimpse into the real-world applications of communication, storytelling, and media production,” explained Dr. Gabriella Franza, assistant director of instructional programs. “By linking classroom learning with industry expertise, Baldwin High School inspired students to explore their interests, build confidence, and envision future careers in media and beyond. Through a combination of hands-on experiences, expert insights, and collaborative learning, the educational experience emerged as an inspiring and memorable event, truly bringing media to life for our Academy students.”

Despite the snowy weather, the Go Live! Day proved to be a big hit among the aspiring communication professionals in the high school’s News, Media and Film Academy and middle school’s Public Speaking and Debate and Bruins News Network Pre-Academies.
