Meadow Elementary School Honors Veterans and Military Families During Military Appreciation Day Ceremony

Nearly $1500 Raised for Building Homes for Heroes

Red, white, and blue decorated the whole back field of Meadow Elementary School as students and staff, adorned in patriotic attire, proudly waved miniature American flags during the Military Appreciation Day Ceremony in recognition of National Military Appreciation Month. With the Nassau County Firefighter Pipes & Drums band helping to commence the ceremony with “God Bless America,” the school-wide event celebrated veterans, active military members, and the families of Meadow students who have served the country with honor and sacrifice.

Organized by teachers Ms. Linda Sandorfi and Ms. Vincenza Simal and led by Meadow’s Student Council, more than 10 veterans from across each branch of the military were honored this year.

Representatives from the United States military in attendance included Mr. Keith Brown, Colonel King Cooper, Mr. Charles Everett, Mr. David Marshall, and Mr. Wayne Miller from the United States Army; Mr. Richard Alexander, Mr. Nur Anderson, and Mrs. Opeoluwa Taylor from the United States Army National Guard; Mr. Denis Clark and Mr. Frank LoPiccolo from the United States Air Force; and Mr. Stephen DeStefani, Lance Corporal Matthew Benny, Mr. Bill “The Can Man” Urianek, and Corporal Kevin Vaughan from the United States Marines.

Once again, Mr. David Marshall, who served in the U.S. Army and fought in World War II at just 18 years old and is now 101 years young, was recognized. Mr. Marshall continues to inspire the students and staff of Meadow—still staying active and working out at the gym.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of a $1,470 check to Building Homes for Heroes® as a result of Meadow’s fundraising efforts. The locally based nonprofit organization provides mortgage-free homes to severely injured veterans and first responders. Representatives from Building Homes for Heroes® accepted the check following a touching speech.

Meadow students and staff raised the funds through the school’s ongoing bottle collection drive, an initiative that has collected more than 99,000 bottles over the past 13 years and generated more than $5,000 in donations for the organization.

Now in its fifth year, the annual ceremony also featured patriotic performances by the Meadow band and chorus, as well as appearances by the Baldwin Fire Department, whose fire engines displayed a large American flag suspended from ladders.

Students and visitors could also explore an extensive war memorabilia exhibit inside the school’s gymnasium or visit the “Wall of Heroes” honoring veterans related to Meadow students and staff.

National Military Appreciation Month, established by Congress in 1999, serves as a time to recognize and thank service members, veterans, and their families. Through this annual tradition, Meadow Elementary continues to teach students the importance of honoring military service, remembering sacrifice, and giving back to those who have served the nation.
