Baldwin UFSD Hosts Series of Groundbreaking Ceremonies

The Baldwin Union Free School District recently launched a series of major capital improvement projects across secondary and elementary schools. Supported by the community, these projects will transform facilities while upgrading aging infrastructure.

To officially kick off the projects, the district hosted a series of Groundbreaking Ceremonies at the schools undergoing the work. District administrators, Board of Education members, PTA representatives, former Superintendent Dr. Shari Camhi, former Board member Mary Jo O'Hagan, along with the architects, officially broke ground with gold shovels in hand.  

"These groundbreaking ceremonies represent far more than the start of construction,” stated Mr. Anthony Mignella, superintendent of schools for Baldwin UFSD. “They symbolize our unwavering commitment to investing in the future of every Baldwin student. It was especially meaningful to celebrate this historic moment alongside our Board of Education, families, staff, and community members, whose support makes these projects possible. Together, we are creating modern, innovative learning environments that will inspire students for generations to come."

Expanding Athletic Facilities

At Baldwin High School, work will encompass the construction of a new athletic complex on the northeast side of campus near the tennis courts. The new facility is planned to eventually connect directly to the existing high school building.

The athletic complex will feature a full-size gymnasium, a modern weight room and fitness area, dedicated yoga and dance instructional space, new parking for visitors and staff, and improved roadway access near the 400 Building to support traffic flow and accessibility. Roof replacement work will also take place in multiple sections of the building.

Baldwin Middle School will receive major upgrades as well, including a new synthetic turf athletic field. Once complete, the field will support lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, athletic practices, and physical education classes. Additional summer work at the middle school will consist of roofing renovations and continued electrical infrastructure improvements.

Modernizing Dining Spaces Across the District

Baldwin's elementary schools will undergo comprehensive cafeteria and kitchen renovations to create modern, efficient, and thoughtfully designed dining spaces. Full-building electrical upgrades are part of this work.

• Brookside Elementary School will receive a brand new cafeteria addition on the east side of the building.
• Both Lenox Elementary School and Meadow Elementary School will receive a new cafeteria addition with a state-of-the-art kitchen on the west side of their buildings.
• Plaza Elementary School is already undergoing construction for a redesigned cafeteria and state-of-the-art kitchen within the existing cafeteria footprint.
• Steele Elementary School will welcome a new cafeteria with a state-of-the-art kitchen on the south side of the building near Grand Boulevard.
