Lucas Chingcuangco and Damian Figueroa Recognized as All-State Musicians

Baldwin High School Students Earn One of New York State’s Highest Honors for Music

This school year, the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) has recognized two Baldwin High School students as All-State musicians, an honor bestowed upon some of the most talented juniors and seniors from across New York. Lucas Chingcuangco and Damian Figueroa were invited to participate in the 2026 NYSSMA All-State Performing Ensemble(s) in Rochester, New York in December. Damian was also named an All-State musician last year. They were chosen from thousands of participants statewide for their exceptional performances at the highest level of difficulty during the NYSSMA solo evaluations.

Ms. Tara Cocheo, director of fine and performing arts for the Baldwin Union Free School District, expressed great pride.

“It is an extraordinary honor to earn a spot in an All-State ensemble,” she stated. “The selection process is highly competitive, based on outstanding NYSSMA scores and strong recommendations from teachers. I am immensely proud to have Lucas and Damian represent Baldwin alongside the finest student musicians in New York State! A special thank you to the teachers and families of these students, whose dedication and support played a key role in their success.”

In addition, as All-State musicians, the students have been invited to participate in NYSSMA’s annual Winter Conference at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center, scheduled for December 3 through December 6. There, the Baldwin musicians will rehearse and perform alongside other selected high school students from across the state under the guidance of nationally recognized conductors. Lucas was chosen for the Symphony Orchestra, where he will play mallet percussion, while Damian was selected for the Wind Ensemble for trombone.

“I am incredibly proud, as I know our entire music community is, to see our students recognized as All-State musicians, one of the highest honors a student musician can achieve in New York State,” said Mr. André H. Poprilo, principal of Baldwin High School. “This remarkable achievement is a testament to the talent and dedication of our students, the commitment of our music teachers, and the unwavering support of their families. Congratulations to Damian and Lucas!”

Each year, more than 6,500 high school sophomores and juniors audition for All-State, with approximately 825 selected statewide. Students prepare a NYSSMA Level VI solo and are evaluated by a NYSSMA-certified All-State adjudicator.
