Baldwin High School Art Students Produce Portraits for Children in India
“Creating a Kinder World Through Art”
For the past 17 years, select students from Baldwin High School’s drawing and painting classes have participated in the Memory Project—a nonprofit foundation established in 2004 that enables art students to create handmade portraits as gifts for children facing significant challenges worldwide. The goal of the Memory Project is to foster intercultural understanding and kindness among children globally. Originally, the project was intended to provide children in orphanages with special memories through portraits, but its mission has since expanded to impact youth facing various challenges worldwide, encouraging empathy and mutual understanding.
Under the direction of art teacher Ms. Michelle Liemer-Kelly, Baldwin students have created artwork for over 300 orphans since the district joined the initiative. Additionally, in recent years, Baldwin High School has expanded this effort to include the “Identity Project,” which allows high school students with varying art skills, such as computer graphics, to design portraits based on words, hobbies, and colors suggested by the children.
As a result of both projects, this year, a total of 25 portraits were created and mailed to children in India.
"Over the years, the Memory project has been a true vehicle of our art students, using their talents to make a tangible difference in the lives of children less fortunate than themselves,” said Baldwin High school art teacher and project advisor, Ms. Liemer-Kelly.
The young artists of Baldwin who donated their time and skills to be part of the Memory and Identity Project found the experience to be rewarding and memorable.
