Baldwin High School Celebrates 92 Years of Sportsnite During Women’s History Month
Blue Team Declares Victory This Year
This March, Baldwin High School proudly celebrated 92 years of Sportsnite, a cherished tradition marked by enthusiastic competition and camaraderie. This deeply rooted in tradition and friendly rivalry stands as one of the district’s most notable celebrations. Fittingly coinciding with Women’s History Month, it pays tribute to the strength and unity of its female students. In a close contest, the Blue Team emerged victorious over the Gold Team with a final score of 32-20.
Participants come together to lead in various disciplines such as arts, dance, stunts, choreography, writing, singing, and event planning. The weeklong celebration incorporates all four grades in the high school, where seniors can mentor and guide younger students as they prepare to transition to college. The unique festivities spanned from March 1 to March 8, with a sneak preview on Monday, followed by a father/daughter night on Tuesday, a mother/daughter banquet on Thursday, a tea dance on Friday, and culminating with "Sportsnite" on Saturday. For this year’s theme, Blue Team captains and high school, seniors Lauren Bregel and Megan Lopez, chose “Blue’s Clues” while seniors Hunter McKenzie and Kaylah Santesteban led the Gold Team with the theme of “GoldWonka.”
The week-long activities are overseen by Baldwin High School teachers, Julianna Polo and Kathryn Thiel.
“All of the girls involved in the program worked very hard, pouring their hearts into each performance,” said Ms. Polo. “The memories they made with their team over the past three months will be cherished for a lifetime.”
Ninety-two years ago, Ethel T. Kloberg, physical education supervisor at Baldwin High School, initiated Sportsnite to promote female empowerment during an era when sports participation for women was limited. Today, the pride-filled event continues to see young women taking on leadership roles, honoring the legacy of those who were once excluded from athletic opportunities.
Months of rehearsal precede the events, during which both teams prepare to compete against one another. However, the relationships, friendships, and skills developed during this time are enduring, often extending well beyond the students’ high school years.
