Baldwin High School Science Class Collaborates with Seatuck Environmental Association and Adelphi University for an Engaging Learning Experience
AP Environmental Students Conduct Research at Hempstead Lake State Park
The AP Environmental class at Baldwin High School recently participated in the course’s annual “Leaving2Learn” at Hempstead Lake State Park. During this educational excursion, students partnered with the Seatuck Environmental Association and Adelphi University. They utilized seine nets and laboratory tools to explore the aquatic life, biodiversity, water chemistry and quality, as well as tides and weather conditions of the Mill River. Their research contributed data to a website developed by Seatuck, which offers environmental statistics to the community.
“Being able to work with both an Environmental Agency and a University allows students to work with professionals in the field to study and discuss real world challenges and our impact on the environment,” explained Susan Ferrigno, science department supervisor for grades 6-12. “For example, they were able to see how dumping an invasive species like Elodea from fishtanks into the water system impacts the ecosystem.”
Students gathered physical data from the site, measuring tidal changes, temperature, wind, and cloud cover with the help of experts. They also conducted a chemical analysis of the water and performed biological sampling to identify the organisms inhabiting the pond. This data enabled Seatuck to build a database for students to investigate patterns and trends. The students plan to return in the spring to assess how the season may affect the findings.
Baldwin UFSD has annually been involved in this program since its inception at Hempstead State Park in the Fall of 2016.
