Baldwin High and Middle School Students Explore Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's DNA Learning Center

Academy and Pre-Academy Engage in a Unique Leaving2Learn Experience

Baldwin High School students from the Medical and Health Sciences Academy as well as Baldwin Middle school students from Mr. Francesco Iannucci’s Medical Detectives Pre-Academy classes embarked on a “Leaving2Learn” at the DNA Learning Center located in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. During this excursion, the students conducted laboratory procedures to analyze DNA samples, employing restriction analysis techniques through gel electrophoresis.

The Medical Detectives immersed themselves in two simulated crime scenes, gaining hands-on experience in tasks like fingerprint collection and DNA sampling for gel electrophoresis analysis. Additionally, they meticulously examined medical clues to determine both the cause of death and the identity of a "missing person." The goal of the activity was to provide students with a hands-on experience similar to what researchers use to identify unknown samples in a laboratory environment. Using deductive inquiry skills, they scrutinized each piece of evidence, established connections between evidence and potential suspects, formulating hypotheses, and systematically tested them to unveil both the culprit and the missing person’s identities.

Overall, the engaging learning experience, utilizing medical and forensic methods employed by industry experts, enhanced the students' investigative prowess while honing their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities crucial for their future endeavors in the medical profession.
