Baldwin UFSD Superintendent Named a “Champion of Education” by the Horace Mann League

Baldwin UFSD Superintendent Named a “Champion of Education” by the Horace Mann League

Dr. Shari Camhi Recognized for Her Dedication to Advancing Public Education

For her outstanding work in advancing public education as an integral part of democracy in the U.S., Dr. Shari L. Camhi, superintendent of the Baldwin Union Free School District in Baldwin, N.Y., has been recognized as a Champion of Education by the Horace Mann League of the USA.

Founded in 1922, the Horace Mann League has served as a beacon of advocacy and leadership in promoting the beliefs of Horace Mann, the pioneer of the American public school system. The League recognizes educational leaders who step out and speak on behalf of public education as a cornerstone of our democracy.

“Superintendent Camhi is an outstanding school district leader with an unwavering dedication to public education, the students in her learning community, and the entire country,” said Jeanné Collins Deweese, executive director of the Horace Mann League. “Dr. Camhi’s innovative leadership in Baldwin Schools and her influential advocacy on a national stage make her a true champion for public education. Her work continues to make a profound difference in the lives of young learners, educators, and families throughout the U.S.”

A key element of Camhi’s success has been the creation of innovative pathways to graduation tailored to meet the needs of every student. Understanding that the one-size-fits-all approach to education doesn’t work, she has spearheaded the development of various high-interest, culturally responsive courses. These courses not only engage students in meaningful ways but also honor and reflect the rich diversity of the Baldwin community. Through these initiatives, she has ensured that all students have access to an education that is relevant, inspiring, and empowering.

In addition to her national advocacy efforts, Camhi was selected by U.S. Ed. Sec. Miguel Cardona to serve on his advisory committee. This prestigious appointment is a testament to her expertise and the high regard in which she is held by her peers. As one of the few superintendents on the committee, she brings a crucial perspective to national education policy, ensuring that the needs and challenges of public schools are well represented at the highest levels.

Camhi served as the 2022-23 president of AASA, The School Superintendents Association. With more than 30 years of experience in both business and education, she has received numerous accolades and recognition for her innovative contributions to K-12 instruction, including Education Week’s “Leaders to Learn From,” the National School Public Relations Association’s “New Superintendents to Watch” and Education Dive’s “Administrators to Watch.” She also received the International Society of Technology in Education’s Sylvia Charp Award. She is frequently invited to present her work to experts and leaders in the field. In the spring of 2022, Baldwin Schools was named an AASA Learning 2025 Lighthouse Demonstration System for its efforts to focus on the whole child and future-driven education.
