NYSSBA Honors Baldwin UFSD with Fifth "Champions of Change" Award

NYSSBA Honors Baldwin UFSD with Fifth "Champions of Change" Award

Baldwin High School@Shubert’s Future Jewelers Academy Recognized

For the fifth time, the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) has recognized Baldwin Union Free School District (UFSD) as a Champion of Change for the new Future Jewelers Academy, a collaboration with the Natural Diamond Council and Black in Jewelry Coalition, which enables Baldwin High School@Shubert students to delve into all aspects of the jewelry industry, from benchwork to design to retail.

NYSSBA’s Champions of Change Recognition Program highlights the many districts and BOCES programs and initiatives that bring positive, meaningful change to the students, communities and districts of New York. Instead of a formal application process, the award committee identifies potential winners through their observations of New York districts and input from members. They subsequently vote on the most exceptional programs.

This marks the third Champions of Change award for the district this year and the fifth one to be received. NYSSBA honored Baldwin UFSD earlier in the school year during the November Board Meeting for both the Baldwin Schools Wellness Center and Brookside Shark Tank Project. Previously, Baldwin UFSD received this award for the Hello Neighbor Project and the high school’s Education Academy.

“Being recognized with our fifth Champions of Change Award by NYSSBA is an especially proud moment for Baldwin UFSD and underscores the district's commitment to creating innovative and successful future-focused academic programs,” stated Dr. Shari L. Camhi, superintendent of schools. “I extend my deepest appreciation to our administrators, our buildings and grounds team, our teachers and students, and our board members, especially Annie Doresca for her help with solidifying our partnership with the Black in Jewelry Coalition and Natural Diamond Council. We could not have launched this program without the support of these two wonderful organizations. We look forward to launching more programs, like the Future Jewelers Academy, that will equip our students with the essential skills needed for their future career.”

Charmise Desire, the Area 11 Director for NYSSBA, presented a Champions of Change banner to the district at the April Board Meeting.
