Steele Elementary School Celebrates 25 Years of Because of Winn-Dixie with Kate DiCamillo

Third Graders Get to Interview Popular Children’s Author Via Zoom During National Reading Month

The third graders at Steele Elementary School recently had the unique opportunity to partake in the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Kate DiCamillo’s cherished novel, Because of Winn-Dixie. The popular book was brought to life during a special virtual interview with the author. The Steele third graders were enthralled as Kate DiCamillo herself read the first chapter, sharing the inspiration and creative process behind her iconic story.

“This book holds a special place in the hearts of our third graders, making this experience even more meaningful,” explained Steele principal, Ms. LaTrace Finney. “We were honored and thrilled to be part of this special webinar and are deeply grateful to the Baldwin School District for making this unforgettable moment possible!”

With March being National Reading Month, the educational experience couldn’t have been more perfectly timed. Third-grade teacher, Sue Michels, discovered and facilitated the unique virtual event, which not only underscored the timeless appeal of Because of Winn-Dixie but also showed the importance of literature in fostering a love for reading among young students.

This memorable learning experience was hosted by Bookelicious and Candlewick Press. In addition to a live session with the author, participating schools received five hardcover copies of Because of Winn-Dixie and a Student Activity Guide.
