Steele Third Grader Wins “Be Kind to Animals” Essay Contest

Steele Third Grader Wins “Be Kind to Animals” Essay Contest

Baldwin Student, Leonardo Pochardo, Recognized for Creative Writing Skills

A third grader from Steele Elementary School, Leonardo Pochardo, has demonstrated a deep appreciation for animals, which he expressed in a countywide essay contest. Out of hundreds of well-written pieces, he was named one of two winners for his grade level in the “Be Kind to Animals” essay contest, organized by the Humane Society of New York, North Shore Animal League, Nassau County SPCA, as well as Office of the Nassau County Executive.

In honor of Earth Day and Be Kind to Animals Month, students in grades 3-5 across Nassau County were invited to participate in a writing contest in April that focused on helping animals who have suffered from abuse or neglect. In a 300-word essay, participants were asked to imagine themselves as superheroes with the power to do anything for animals, empowered to make a difference for animals in need, and encouraged creativity by considering the actions they would take. Two winners were chosen from each participating grade (3-5) and celebrated during a special awards ceremony at the County Executive’s Office.

His teacher, Mrs. Michele Lanci, and Steele principal, Ms. LaTrace Finney, were full of pride.

“I am so proud of Leo for having his essay on kindness to animals selected—what an incredible honor!” said Ms. Finney. “His words reflect the heart of what we value most at Steele: teaching compassion, empathy, and respect for all living things.”

During the awards ceremony, Leonardo accepted a citation from Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman along with two $25 gift cards for his award-winning essay, selected from entries by hundreds of elementary students. He was also excited to receive two plushies and five books about animal safety from the North Shore Animal League!

“Leo’s voice reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can inspire great change,” Ms. Finney added.
