Culinary and Life Skills Students Gain Hands-on Experience from Chef Hal Udell
Baldwin High School Welcomes Back Proud Alum
Baldwin High School recently had the honor of hosting Chef Hal Udell, a distinguished alum. As the founder of Cooking with Hal, he brought nearly 30 years of professional culinary expertise to the culinary arts and life skills students, having trained under master chefs. He’s also been featured in notable media like the Food Network.
These days, Chef Hal is particularly passionate about youth wellness, serving as an Executive Board Member of Chef and Child (American Culinary Federation, Long Island Chapter) and Vice President of the Seaford Wellness Council. Over the past year, he has educated more than 10,000 children about healthy eating habits, empowering them to make informed decisions during mealtime and snack time.
“Chef Hal’s visit was not just a cooking demonstration; it was a powerful lesson on how small choices can contribute to lifelong wellness. Our students left feeling inspired and informed,” said teacher, Ms. Samantha Billg.
During his visit, Chef Hal worked with Baldwin students enrolled in culinary arts courses—including Culinary Arts 1, Advanced Culinary, Food & Culture—as well as the Life Skills students. Each class, which ranged from grades 9 through 12, focused on making healthy food choices. His visit was packed with activities, allowing students to prepare and taste the samples within a single class period. For instance, Baldwin’s aspiring chefs prepared and sampled nutritious "potato chip" alternatives, such as kale and cabbage chips.
Following the positive feedback, plans are underway for Chef Hal's return in the spring to further explore the creation of healthy snacks.
