“High School Heroes” Teach Financial Literacy to Meadow Elementary School Students
Secondary Students Spend Week Giving Virtual Lessons to Third Graders
Baldwin High School students in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) program, as well as Family and Consumer Sciences and Business classes, recently taught financial literacy to 7 classes in 3rd grade as part of the “High School Heroes” event sponsored by Junior Achievement for New York, a nonprofit organization aiming to educate students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. Despite the voluntary program taking place virtually this year, more than 10 students participated. The district has partnered with Junior Achievement for New York for almost 20 years.
As part of the High School Heroes program, representatives from the nonprofit conduct two one-and-a-half-hour trainings about lesson plans and other important aspects of teaching. Those who take part in ultimately learn time management, presentation and leadership skills, accountability, and discipline. The high school students also have the opportunity to apply for college scholarships through Junior Achievement. Both the elementary and secondary students appreciated the experience and were pleased that this partnership with Junior Achievement still transpired, despite the pandemic.
