Baldwin Middle School Gives Back This Winter

More than 150 Pieces of Cold Weather Gear Collected

The student government program at Baldwin Middle School, Student Interest Organization (SIO), organized a “Winter Giveback,” with the goal of gathering warm clothing for the homeless. Students, grades 6-8, were able to collect more than 150 articles of clothing, consisting of gloves, hats, scarves, and socks. The items were extended to the Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing, which “strives to help create and support a ‘culture of kindness’ that recognizes the dignity and worth of every human person irrespective of their circumstances or condition.”

The middle school’s “Winter Giveback” ties directly into the district’s initiative, Baldwin 2035, where one of the cornerstones focuses on promoting positive relationships, citizenship and collaboration through acts of service and kindness. Baldwin Middle School principal, Dr. Erica Taylor, recommended a homeless service project for the winter season to the SIO.

“This year, Baldwin Middle School students have committed themselves to creating a culture of kindness within our school community,” said Dr. Taylor. “Our Student Interest Organization has extended the culture of kindness to the outside community and abroad. We have challenged ourselves to give more than we receive, with the hopes that others will also pay it forward. We've noticed that every community outreach and service project we participate in makes our students want to be better citizens and challenges them to do more, go harder and think bigger.”

The Winter Giveback was a success, prompting the middle school SIO to further explore other ways to contribute to their community and make a difference.

“It's no secret that in the words of Nelson Mandela, ‘Our society needs to re-establish a culture of caring.’ We are trying to do our part!” added Dr. Taylor.

So far, it is working. The Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing were grateful to receive such a large donation of winter gear.
