Second Graders Learn Financial Literacy and More Through Student-Produced Business Pitched to Baldwin "Shark Tank"

During a Shark Tank-inspired assembly, Brookside Elementary School second graders successfully presented their innovative business venture, "Second Aide Entrepreneurs," to a panel of 'sharks' in order to secure funding for their lemonade stand, which will raise money for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation in support of pediatric cancer research. Following their persuasive presentation, which included a student-produced commercial, the students immediately received more than $250 in donations from families and staff in attendance. This student-led endeavor is in line with the district's "Baldwin 2035" initiative and garnered attention from media outlets, including NewsdayNewsday TV, and News 12. 

This project provided a deeper learning experience for students and is directly tied to their unit of study on financial literacy. Additional skills developed encompassed the district's six "C's" for learning: communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, character and civics

A group of second graders are the newest entrepreneurs at Brookside Elementary school in Baldwin.

The savvy students were able to convince a panel of school administrators to invest $85 in their startup lemonade business.

The student business initiative was modeled after the television show "Shark Tank."

Students researched and worked on marketing strategies for several weeks to prepare for Friday's presentation.
Funds from their new business will go to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Cancer Research.

A pitch to set up a lemonade stand tossed a group of second-graders into the “shark tank” Friday at Brookside Elementary School.

The entire second grade of the Baldwin school, 42 students in all, proposed “Second Aid Lemonade,” a lemonade business venture, to four school administrators or “sharks,” in a mini-version of the ABC entrepreneurial show, in front of parents and guardians.

Walking into the school's gymnasium to the show's iconic theme song, the students dressed in all yellow outfits, and asked the “sharks” for an $85 investment.

The young entrepreneurs then presented a slideshow of their business proposal, including a commercial on a large screen to superintendent Shari L. Camhi, assistant superintendent for instruction Anthony Mignella, school principal Anne Marie Squicciarini, and PTA president Raquel Stephenson.
