Baldwin High School's School-to-Career Program Partner Recognized by BTANYS

Northwell Health's Cheryl Davidson, the Dept. of Workforce Readiness and Baldwin UFSD Honored with Hobart H. Conover Friends of Business Education Award

The Business Teachers Association of New York State (BTANYS) announces Cheryl Davidson and the Department of Workforce Readiness Northwell Health with Baldwin Schools as Hobart H. Conover Friend of Business Education Winners 2020-2021. This award recognizes an individual or organization outside the field of business education for their meritorious contribution to the improvement, promotion, development, and progress of business education. 

Cheryl Davidson is the Corporate Senior Director of Workforce Readiness within Talent Acquisition at Northwell Health. Cheryl has more than 20 years’ experience in developing and executing strategies that build collaboration between business, education (k-graduate school), government and community-based organization to create a skilled and educated workforce pipeline. She has been the fairy godmother and invaluable partner in providing school to career opportunities to literally hundreds of our students. 

Cheryl has been a partner of the Baldwin Business Education Department, School to Career Committee, and Business Advisory Board for over 10 years. Cheryl is responsible for transforming pipeline development through innovative programs, educational partnerships, targeted recruitment and talent communities. Her key areas of focus include Diversity & Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities & Veterans, Nursing Externs/Fellowships, Student Programs, and Internships. Her influence and impact span across business initiatives, large scale opportunities for students and effecting change on individual students. 

She introduced the concept of Career Academies to the region, resulting in the creation of the Business Academy at Baldwin High School. The development of the Business Academy is a transformational approach to educating students through the use of industry themes and relevance. Even in a virtual year, Cheryl and her department were relentless in maintaining the same level of engagement and opportunity for business students. 

In the Summer of 2020, Northwell Workforce Development launched the Career Development Certificate, resulting in over 200 Baldwin students (mostly in FBLA and the Work Experience Program) receiving the certification and being prepared in careers, interviewing and resume writing. In a year of challenging placements for our Senior Internship program, Northwell piloted the virtual career panel to replace in person experiences.

For the 12 past years, Cheryl, along with Brookhaven National Lab, and Cradle of Aviation co-steward the region-wide LI STEM Hub, which encourages students to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. The LI STEM Hub is linked to the NYS Empire STEM Network where she is a founding member and is on the Leadership Advisory Council. 

Cheryl has developed a multitude of highly successful and innovative initiatives including: creating neurodiverse student internship and mentoring programs, a student Veteran Mentoring program, Regional Industry Councils aligned to high growth industries with education, Regional Professional Development Day for Educators, Healthcare Forums bringing regional healthcare professionals and educators together, as well as career exploration programs for thousands of students through the Spark! Challenge, Medical Marvel Research Competition, Career Conversations events and a Career Development Certificate program.
